Toyota’s Corolla Cross proves you don’t need to spend much money to enjoy a high-quality new car. Now in its second generation after its 2020 introduction, this affordable subcompact SUV still offers excellent value. While the Corolla Cross is a relatively recent addition to the Toyota lineup, it evolved from the Corolla, one of the manufacturer’s most popular vehicles since its 1968 launch. While there are only minor cosmetic changes this year, Toyota builds on the Corolla’s legacy with the release of the 2025 Corolla Cross.
The low price of the Corolla Cross is one of its greatest selling points. Consider your lifestyle, preferences, and budget carefully to select the right model.
The 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross has a starting MSRP of $24,035 for the gas-powered entry-level L. The mid-range LE trim starts from $26,365, while the top-of-the-range XLE has a starting price of $28,260.
Toyota also offers the 2025 Corolla Cross in four hybrid engine trims. The base-level Hybrid S trim starts at $28,395. You’ll pay $29,715 for the mid-level Hybrid SE as standard, $30,640 for the Hybrid Nightshade, and $31,580 for the top option, the Hybrid XSE.
The gas-powered and hybrid Toyota Corolla Cross models are some of the most affordably priced in their class. If you drive a lot, the hybrid’s lower fuel bills will quickly offset its higher initial cost. However, the gas-powered Corolla Cross is still fuel-efficient by current standards.
One of the entry-level trims may be the most logical choice if you’re on a tight budget. Remember that hybrid vehicles offer a little more bang for your buck. If you can stretch your budget, you may be more comfortable in at least the mid-level LE rather than the L.Â
The Toyota Corolla Cross is available with a standard gas-powered engine or hybrid powertrain. Take a closer look at the powertrains and how they impact the Corolla Cross’ performance.
A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine powers the Corolla Cross L, LE, and XLE. This motor produces 169 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid powertrain adds three electric motors to the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which increases power to 196 hp. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional for the gas-powered Corolla Cross. All hybrid trims have all-wheel drive.
All 2025 Corolla Cross models have a continuously variable automatic transmission system. This intuitive system makes for a smoother, more fuel-efficient ride.
The standard gas-powered Corolla Cross reaches 60 mph in 9.2 seconds, while the hybrid’s zippier engine gets there in 7.3 seconds. This extra pep makes the hybrid more fun, but both vehicles have enough energy for comfortable city driving.
The EPA estimates the standard Corolla Cross should get 31 mpg around the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Choosing all-wheel drive lowers those estimates to 29 mpg for city driving and 31 mpg on the highway. Real-world independent testing came close to those estimates, with an all-wheel drive version getting 30 mpg on the highway.
The hybrid’s fuel economy is markedly better, with the EPA estimating it’ll get 45 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. Independent highway testing saw a hybrid Corolla Cross getting 36 mpg while traveling 75 mph.
The Corolla Cross’ interior takes its design cues from Corolla hatchbacks and sedans. Toyota makes the most of its size to help you and your passengers feel comfortable.
From its layout to its materials, there’s little to distinguish the Corolla Cross’ interior from the Corolla cabins. It’s more like the sedan than the hatchback, treating travelers in the front and back to plenty of space. The materials are practical without being plush, ranging from cloth upholstery on the lower trims to faux leather on the high-end options.
Cargo space is one area where the standard models have the hybrids beaten. The standard Corolla Cross has 24 cubic feet behind the second row, while the hybrid has 21.5 cubes. Both vehicles offer substantially more cargo room than the classic Corolla hatchback, so you shouldn’t struggle to find space for your shopping or suitcases.
Toyota’s tech features help make the driving experience safer and more engaging.
Every 2025 Corolla Cross features an 8-inch infotainment display. Toyota’s latest software is built-in, but you can expand your apps by connecting your mobile device with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. A small 4.2-inch digital cluster comes standard on all but the top trims, which have a much larger 7-inch unit. If you’re serious about your tech, you can choose optional extras such as a wireless smartphone charging pad, USB charging ports for the back seats, and a premium JBL sound system.
The list of standard Toyota Corolla Cross safety features is impressive for its price point. You won’t pay extra for high-end inclusions such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
While the 2025 Corolla Cross ticks many boxes, taking it for a test-drive is the best way to decide if it’s the right vehicle for you.
